Without the appropriate materials, it can be difficult to provide our students with what they need to satisfy their sensory cravings. Just as children need food throughout the day, they also need sensory input and opportunities to get away from sensory stimulation throughout the day. Some of my kiddos need a “sensory break” to remove themselves from a noisy room, or from other stimulation such as colors or smells. Other kiddos are “sensory seekers” and crave sensory input. These are kiddos who need opportunities to walk, jump, swing, touch, taste, see, etc. Examples include activities such as slow swinging or rocking. Having a variety of sensory items for my kiddos including a swing, weighted blanket, rocking bowl, etc. will help these kiddos self-regulate. Self-regulation is a key component in managing emotions and behaviors. By donating to my project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, but you will also ultimately help to increase their academic and functional needs. Sensory interventions are so important since they organize, calm, and make children "ready" to learn. These early years are so important, and we would never want them to miss out on crucial educational learning because of something they physically cannot control!
