My class, on average, started the school year reading one to two years below grade level. That means that my students need to grow about two grade levels in reading this year to be successful in second grade. We've got a lot of growing to do, and growing readers need LOTS of books! I have seen many, many students grow multiple grade levels in reading in one school year; it is absolutely possible to do. There are two major factors that enable this growth. The first one is level of student determination and focus on their goals. The second one is time spent reading books at their level. This is where YOU come in! My students need sets of leveled books that they can read independently so they can grow into the confident readers they KNOW they can (and will!) be.
They are excited and determined to read, but like any skill, it takes a lot of practice. Access to a wide variety of leveled books that they can read independently will help them become better readers, boost their self-confidence as they grow, and ultimately give them the skills to be successful on-grade or above-grade level readers.
