I teach at a Title I school that lies within a neighborhood with many socioeconomic difficulties. Many of my 8th grade students began this school year reading below grade level. They lack motivation due to not having the ability to read fluently, and this affects them in other academic areas as well. Also, the students seem to be uninterested in reading because there isn't a variety of topics available that interest them, in our media center. I'd like to offer more reading material, in hopes of fostering a love for reading that will carry them throughout their high school and college careers. I want to encourage a life long love of reading by creating a classroom library full of books that will strike a cord of interests that my students might not have discovered otherwise. I'm reminded of the quote that says, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
