My students are each amazing in his or her own ways. They have grit and the greatest resiliency and determination, which inspires me everyday. My students have huge goals and aspirations to be successful future leaders in our community, state, and nation. My students are however, at a disadvantage due to the zip code they live in. 94.56% of my students are on free or reduced lunch and the ACT average composite score at my school is a 16.9, nearly 7 points lower than the suburb miles down the block. Because of this great gap they are conditioned to think that they are not smart enough, "good" enough, and loved enough by their community, school, or even teachers. I know that they are intelligent young men and women. They are strong, powerful, and motivated leaders that will change the world, one day. And they deserve to have an excellent education with the resources needed for them to learn and succeed in class and in life.
