As a high school psychology teacher, I think it's important to dedicate a good deal of time to dealing with negative emotions and conflict. As teenagers brains are still developing, especially those parts that regulate behavior and risk assessment, it's important to address the mental health needs of teenagers as they learn to navigate social situations and negative emotions. I am requesting class sets of the two books, Speak and It's Kind of a Funny Story. Creating healthy and well adjusted adults starts with acknowledging that depression and loneliness are very real feelings. If we talk about them openly and honestly, we can hopefully prevent students from feelings of isolation and anxiety as they navigate the world.
