My students are on the alternative curriculum which is based on the premise that every student no matter how severe his or her disability is capable of living working and recreating in the community. Our classroom goals are to focus on engaging my students in constructive and personal leisure activities in school, home, and the community. We focus on increasing the likelihood of our students functioning as contributing adults within our society and increase opportunities of obtaining employment. We need to prepare our students to become as independent as possible in his or her living environment in terms of functional academics I stress the importance of academics necessary to participate in everyday life activities with goals of maximum independence. Subject areas include community awareness, social awareness, money handling and time management, practical writing skills, and social skills.
