2 years ago I personally purchased 4 personal CD players. They are extremely out dated, and my students find it nearly impossible to choose a specific book on them. Only 3 of these CD players work at all any more, all of which are now are skipping. These have also posed a continuous cost to me personally with burning CD's for them to listen to (they get scratched very easily in the hands of kindergarteners!) Our students need iPods to be able to choose personally enjoyable books to listen to from my collection, without the constant hassle of a skipping CD or listening to the same first 2 books each time they go to the center.
Listening to reading has a direct influence on students reading fluency. My students rotate through several centers each day, one of which is a listening center. This center allows them even more opportunities to hearing stories read to them. This is not something every student gets to experience at home. While I do read many stories to them, you can never hear too many! This listening center will open up many opportunities beyond just learning to use current technology, it will open up new worlds of adventures!
