Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty finding the joy in school. I serve students with intellectual, emotional, and specific learning disabilities as well as autism spectrum disorder. The bulk of my students read two years below grade level. Many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 100% of our school's students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated, and technology is shared between too many classrooms. As a special education teacher, I'm expected to deliver excellent instruction in reading, math, science, and history without the requisite tools to teach my students.
