About my class

This year I am participating in the #classroombookaday challenge. This initiative, based on the work of leaders in our field (Donalyn Miller and Jillian Heise), focuses on reading a picture book daily with your students. Through the use of thoughtfully selected picture books, students build empathy, develop common schema, are exposed to diverse stories, enhance their listening skills and have dozens of opportunities to discuss complete texts as a whole class- just to name a few! These books will give my students that chance to see characters who look like they do, have experiences like they do and are celebrated like they should be! These books will help build empathy and focus on character traits like kindness and the ability to persevere. Reading together daily is one of the most powerful parts of our day. My students listen raptly, so eager to hear what we are going to read next. These books will help ensure that not only will this class of students get a chance to hear these wonderful texts- but future classmates will as well!
