My students are learner engineers and when they step into an English classroom. They want to make their ideas, reflections, and questions comes to life. However, as the first senior class ever at their small, yet growing public charter school, basic resources, specifically books are not available. Furthermore, I am hoping to mix up the literature read so that authors of different ethnicities, races, and creeds are brought into the predominately white and ancient authors usually read. Kindred is fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction wrapped up into one outstanding novel. This book would be an excellent addition to a Historical Hero Unit focused on multiculturalism I am creating for the senior English curriculum. Ultimately this project is simple: equip students with the physical materials to read and take ownership of the book, nourishing self-directive learning, curiosity, and design thinking.
