My goal this year to is to help my middle school students with their mental health. My art classroom has always been a safe space, but I’d like to create a specific “calm corner” where kids can go when they need to calm down, need some space, need to express themselves, or need to be alone. I think it’s important that they have an area designated for their emotions and that is where I can communicate with them one-on-one confidentially and help them work through how they are feeling. I want to help them cope with how their feeling in a healthy, positive way and sometimes the first step is to catch your breath in a safe space. I want it to be welcoming and positive with sensory and fidget toys to also help calm them.
