For 25+ years, our school participated in Harvard Model Congress (HMC) which gave students the opportunity to experience the U.S. democratic process first hand. In the 9 years that I was involved as the faculty advisor, between 20 and 24 students attended each year- some students attended all 4 years, and most attended the conference for 2+ years. This year we have decided to offer 24 students the opportunity to attend the Harvard Model United Nations conference, a decidedly more competitive experience. At HMUN, delegates gain insight into the workings of the United Nations and the dynamics of international relations and diplomacy by assuming the roles of world leaders and international decision makers. Delegates debate the most pressing, complex issues of the day and draft innovative, creative solutions. Students from our delegation will represent Spain at the 2020 conference, adding a layer of complexity to the research, and debate process. Leading up to the conference, students will be expected to meet with faculty advisors to research roles on various committees including the Futuristic General Assembly, World Health Organization (WHO), North Atlantic Treaty Organization; NATO, and Human Rights Council, just to name a few. Additionally, within their committees, students will be expected to become experts on a range of specialized topic such as the Israel/Palestine conflict, access to healthcare for displaced persons, the economic impact of climate change, etc. After an initial research period, students are expected to write position papers as a final preparation for the conference. Once there, they will put their research and debate skills to the test in a four day simulation of the United Nations. You will be helping our student delegates offset the cost of this amazing experience!
