It is so important that we expose our youth to all the cultural identities and experiences of global citizens - now more than ever! My goal with this project is to enhance my classroom library to share stories and engage third graders in deep discussions about racial disparity, oppression, true history (even when ugly and sad) and gender diversity. I want to decrease the "hetero white normative" perspective of the typical book selection and help students see "the other" as rich and valued members of our community. The books on my list range from picture books that can be used for read aloud to books that can be used for literacy circles and IDR reflection and journaling. For our few questioning, trans, indigenous and BIPOC students - these books will help them find themselves in literature, an appalling gap that needs to be filled.
