My students are 95% urban minority high school students, Black, Latino, Asian, and Arab. Most of them have no prior musical experience. All of them listen to music that matters to them, and this music is the content of our class - "Modern Band." I teach my students to play guitar, keyboard, bass, and drums, then teach them to put these instruments together to play their choice of pop, rock, and rap songs. They perform in small bands at assemblies and at our our spring arts festival. The students gain all the scientifically proven benefits of music education, including increased activity and connection between left and right brain hemispheres, improved test scores and collaborative skills, and reduced dropout rate and stress level. Students' musical efforts, collaboration, dedication, persistence, and focus, combine to foster an enthusiastic school climate.
