I work with scholars with a range of disabilities from Autism to Specific Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Intellectual Disability. We work intensely in the areas of reading and math. I do teach them important skills, but conversely, I learn SO much from them! My scholars help me evolve as an educator on a daily basis. They are all so unique. As educators, it's important to foster a variety of skills. One way I do this is through Destination Imagination. I only have 7 slots, so I recruit scholars with IEPs who I think would most benefit from the experience of Destination Imagination. I have a diverse mix of disabled and non-disabled students across genders and grade levels. It extends inclusiveness beyond the classroom, and fosters teamwork, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration. I also develop meaningful relationships with scholars. I meet them where they are and we build from there.
