My first grade students struggle to understand how print works, so they read and write well below grade level. The first graders undergo six intensive tests to help me identify those boys and girls performing below expectations (the lowest 25%). No child is eliminated from the possibility of being chosen unless an IEP including reading goals is part of their educational plan. Otherwise, I choose four students who work with me daily for thirty minutes of intensive reading and writing. These thirty, one-on-one sessions allow me to meet the specific needs of each child in both reading and writing with the goal of being at or above grade level in 20 weeks or less. I also work with these student through both second and third to instill those good reading and writing habits. I adore my time with these students because we share our lives together while building a love of reading!
