I have taught 2nd grade in a lively suburban primary school that is filled with wonder and excitement for the past four years. My 2nd graders have very different personalities, likes and interests. They come from different socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. However, what they all have in common is a love of the written word. Some students love reading fiction, some nonfiction, others love poetry or biographies and some just love to listen to stories. Our classroom motto is "Spectacular Similarities and Delightful Differences". My biggest challenge this year is to keep my classroom library adequately stocked with high quality, high interest literature. I scoured thrift shops and reached out to friends asking for gently used books. What I have ended up with is a Hodge Podge of books that are adequate at best. My students are searching for books they can read and enjoy by themselves or with a group. They deserve a library that will allow them to develop a life long love of reading.
