My students are typical New York teenagers. Usually math is "boring" or "too hard", and definitely not as interesting at the latest moment's gossip. They are funny, spunky, inquisitive, and looking for direction. They are in a supportive 6-8 learning community with teachers who go above and beyond. There are not too many times when the students seem engaged or excited. Whenever technology is used in the classroom, my students literally jump out of their seats to participate. Many students are visual, tactile, and interpersonal learners. They have good hearts, especially considering some of the unfortunate circumstances and responsibilities they face at home.
