I teach 23, second grade students. Over half of my students yearly are ELLs (English Language Learners). As a whole, 3/4 of the my school's population are on free or reduced lunch. Background knowledge is crucial to a child's academic success. Young children, especially those from at-risk communities, need broad and deep exposure to text and rich vocabulary in order to develop more complex thinking skills.
