I teach in an all girls public school in Ward 8 in Washington, D.C called Excel Academy. The school serves students in PK-8th grade. I teach the students that are in PK-5th grade. The school is 100% African American and also 100% of the children qualify for free and reduced lunch. The school believes in building a string sisterhood among the girls and assist them to achieve success in STEM, the Arts and be college and career ready. Many students have difficult life situations and still come to school with an enthusiasm for learning and love being part of the Excel Academy community. We have also begun to build a strong extracurricular program that include cross country, track and field, basketball, cheerleading, dance team, drum line and swim team. All 2nd graders learn to ride a bike and 3rd graders receive swim lessons in PE class. The students receive Art, PE, Health, Music, Dance and Science every week.
