Through this project, my students now and beyond will be able to physically hold an inspiring book in their hands, give their eyes a break from screens, and have an opportunity to change their perspectives and open their hearts. Each of these books either contains a powerful heart story and contain the power to open hearts. Each chosen story contains various teachable moments about perspective, stereotyping, and/or activism which will connect to different themes we study throughout the year. Students will also have the chance to see themselves as positive change-makers- which is not a common occurrence in today's literature. As we engage in learning about U.S. history, civic engagement, and social justice, students will be able to participate in various book clubs that will ask them to participate in group reflections and discussions about how their book is impacting and connecting to what they are exploring throughout their class projects.
