This year, for the first time, I am teaching all subjects in my fifth grade classroom. Due to a lack of transitions among classes, I want to incorporate as much movement in my classroom as possible. If my project is funded, I will use these stability balls during small group instruction time. This time in the classroom is fundamental for student success. This small group time is when students become strong readers, more advanced writers and learn how to apply math strategies. A small group setting is more suitable for most learners. During this time, I will be differentiating my instruction to meet the needs of my students. My hope is to be able to differentiate their seating choices as well. I have many special education students in my classroom, including those with Autism, who struggle with motor control and processing sensory input. These balls will not only aid my active students, they will also encourage core strength and sensory integration into every lesson for those students who process the world around them in a different manner. These stability balls will give my students the movement that their small bodies require and their brains crave so that they can stay focused and learn to the best of their ability. By providing students with a means through which to channel their energy, learning will increase in all subject areas. I am hoping, with your help, my students will be able to "move" their way towards success in the classroom!
