I teach 76 amazing sixth graders at a charter school in North Minnesota. Our school is very passionate about providing our predominately African American students with a superior academic, social, and moral education. This means going back to our roots as a community to find strength and pride in who we are and where we come from. My students are avid readers who yearn to know more about their history, but it's not always easy to find themselves or their heritage reflected in mainstream middle grade books.
