In my literacy-rich classroom, my students get a chance to "book shop" and fill up a book bin with books they want to read and that are at their reading level. As a new teacher, I have accumulated many books from garage sales, discount stores, and through my own hard-earned dollars. I will cherish this first classroom library but as I am beginning to sort through it, I am realizing my beginning readers will be missing quality literature. They will not have nearly as many books to choose from as their more advanced peers. Trade books, or the books we see shiny and new at Target such as Pinkalicious or Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, are often written too hard for my little six and seven-year-olds. They deserve to feel like successful readers just like more advanced readers. That is why I am asking for your help! My students need more books that are at their reading level and interest level. Kindergarten teachers have created a great literacy foundation for my first-graders, and I need the bricks to continue to build their reading and literary confidence. The Reading Recovery sets I have selected will help my struggling readers feel successful through well-designed images that give clues on new words to age-appropriate topics. Reading Recovery is a national program that helps struggling readers succeed through carefully selected literature. I want every student to feel like their classroom library is built for them and that they are not excluded from finding books that they can read. The leveled sets selected with help provide books for students who are coming in needing extra help with reading and loving to read. You can help these students become successful readers directly through your generous donation!
