My students desperately need a functional sensory room. We currently have some basics, that we’ve been using. However, we need mats for the walls and floors in order to facilitate student safety. Many of my students struggle with self injurious behavior(s) than can be harmful to themselves and others. The mats are critical in protecting the students from being injured when these self injurious behaviors occur. My students would feel safer and more confident with the addition of the mats in our class sensory room. Students would have a place to go when they are feeling upset, angry, or frustrated. They would be able to have a break, safely, and return to working upon taking the time to cool down and work on processing their emotions by working to tell the teacher, teacher’s aids, or therapists how they are feeling (either vocally, using their AAC device, or using a low-tech communication system). Then, the students would be able to work on telling the staff (through the same communication modes) what they want or need in order to feel happy and ready to learn. My students need a classroom environment where they can feel safe and where their feelings, wants, and needs are heard. This will help build staff and student relationships, and trust. It is my belief that student safety, trust, and positive student - teacher relationships are the building blocks to student success in the classroom and give them the ability to grow and learn everyday.
