Regular independent reading aids the development of specific skills and habits that contribute to students’ overall reading achievement. Hundreds of studies have found that the best readers read the most and that poor readers read the least, these studies suggest that the more children read , the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through successful independent reading practice at home, students will consolidate reading skills and strategies and will come to own them. Our students spend most of their school time receiving instruction. Students need time to read independently. Unfortunately most of my students do not have books at home. They need a chance to practice the strategies they have learned in class during instruction. With these books students will be able to take them home and read. These books will make a dramatic impact in their reading capacity by improving comprehension, building vocabulary, Increase fluency, develop background knowledge and will build cultural literacy.
