My students are bright, motivated young minds that are faced with the constant challenges of poverty. The school is composed of nearly all minority students, and 88% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. My school is breaking down barriers to college for each of our kids. For the class of 2014, 90% of graduates planned to enroll in college in the fall. Freire students beat local, state, and national averages year after year in their college persistence rates. In each graduating class, 89% to 92% of all of our first-year college freshmen return to college for their sophomore year. Furthermore, Freire was recently ranked as the 5th best high school in the city of Philadelphia because we are able to do so much with so little.
