My sixth graders bring energy and life to my classroom and are eager to learn. More than half of them live below the poverty level. Their abilities vary as much as their personalities. Many are weak readers with little interest in history. History comes to life for them through the use of novels. They enjoy the personal nature of having their own (borrowed) novel to carry around with them. They delight in the anecdotes and personalization of the history that naturally flows in such works. They are drawn to the characters and thereby successfully learn deeper, more complex lessons. Our school houses 500 youngsters in grades 6 - 8. This is the perfect setting for addressing social and historic wrongs, such as slavery. Middle school children are especially in tuned to fairness and their perceptions are honed through this study.
