The goal of this project is to provide students with books that highlight and represent diverse main characters. When students pick books from our classroom library, they rely heavily on cover art, book titles, and the character's experiences that are highlighted on the back cover. When choosing books, I looked for novels that would make students want to read, while supporting their experiences as diverse young people in today's America. We read the books we can see ourselves in, and these books have been chosen to help students build connection with their main characters and to build a love for reading. While my classroom shifts into a more balanced literacy approach, I look to provide students more reading material to fill their book baggies with as well.
