It is my goal to inspire more students to open the door to the great outdoors! My classroom is where my biology students meet; however, the outdoors is where they often learn best. My classroom is a little oasis of orphan snakes, turtles, frogs and fish and my students love holding, observing and caring for them. My students, representing diverse academic levels and ethnicities, have one big thing in common: they spend very little time exploring their environment. My 11th and 12th graders live in a suburban setting where parks are usually areas to play basketball or soccer. Like most kids though, they inherently love animals and nature. My wildlife filled classroom is an enticing baby step to understanding animals and ecosystems. Some of my students have taken their new found love of nature and have turned it into community work on our threatened turtles. Others have gone on to school or work in environmental fields.
