In arts education, students are expected to have access to art materials and time to create or make. My students need more than that - they need inspiration, they need to see themselves (all colors, all ethnicities, all abilities) reflected in the world of art, and they need some guidance in how to experiment and try new strategies, concepts and approaches in their art-making. Linking literacy learning and the arts is a powerful way to expose my students to these new creative ideas as well as influential artists who have come before them. With these books we'll be able to do so much more than put crayon to paper - my students will learn about the styles of Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frida Kahlo and Ruth Asawa. They will see in pictures and language they can understand, the concepts of spacial awareness, shape, line and color. They will come to understand that art is not just a fun activity to do in your spare time, but an essential element that defines our environments through architecture and furniture, murals and fashion, marketing and movement. Please, help build our library, give my students access and inspiration, and support arts programming which has long been underfunded and overlooked by our educational system.
