The seating and supplies I have requested for my classroom will go directly to being a flexible seating option for my first grade students. Flexible seating shows my students learning can be fun and engaging. It also allows students to take charge of their learning and make better choices that work for them and how they learn. Currently, during independent work times my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at other tables or laying on our carpet with pillows and clip boards. During instruction time as well I have 2 flexible seating options that my students have the opportunity to use and "pass" to another scholar who is making excellent choices. This choice and ability to have a voice in our classroom has increased productivity and engagement. I want to expand my scholars options for seating even more, while also teaching them that we all have different ways we learn. I want my scholars to tap into how they learn best. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to succeed. I have noticed outstanding differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. I plan on having different levels of flexible seating options bands for students who prefer to sit in a desk but need that leg movement. The bouncy balls I plan to have located in an area for use during independent work time. And the stools will be dispersed throughout.
