My class is an Intensive Reading class. The students are with me because they have not passed the mandatory state reading assessments. They struggle with reading for reasons such as home life, learning disabilities, and test anxiety. Many of my students also speak English as a second language. To these students, reading is typically a chore and it is boring. Our school is in a diverse area and we have students from many different family backgrounds. About 75% of our student population is on free or reduced lunch, and some of my own students are homeless. However, at our school we believe that demography does not determine destiny or success.
