My students need to see themselves in the books that we read because it tells them that they are valued and that their story matters. When they see stories that speak to their experiences and culture, they can imagine writing their own stories and living those same experiences. I want my students to know that each of their stories is important and empower them to contribute to the global narrative with their unique voices. With these new books, my students will not only see themselves in the characters, they will travel to far away lands and gain an appreciation for many cultures. Our school values multiculturalism and our classroom library should communicate that to students. Not only will students enjoy reading these books, they will use them as inspiration when writing stories of their own. Kindergarten students benefit from modeling their writing after mentor texts, and these books will provide more texts for them to explore.
