In order for you to understand the need for literature in our school, I must explain our school's situation. As a charter school, our funding is limited- but after 15+ years of working out of shopping malls, youth centers, church buildings, etc. we finally have our very own building (thanks to South Maui Learning Ohana)- tailored to the needs of our students and faculty. Sadly, though, the majority of our reading material is limited to the middle school level (per unwanted donations from other schools). I am asking for a selection of literature that is crucial to the development of a future liberal arts student. I have most of what I need furniture-wise to create a cute and comfy book nook corner, but I am lacking the essentials (BOOKS)! My vision is a comfortable, soothing area, where my students can spend 10-15 minutes reading every day. I am hoping that I can assign groups to read a book from the selection requested, followed up with a writing assignment. I want to expose them to literature at a young age, as many of them have never had an encounter with in-depth reading. My students deserve to be able to discuss hunting with Hemingway, walk the garden with Emily Dickinson, to visit 1984 with Orwell. For the children that need a dream to hold on to, a world to escape to, I want to have a selection of universes on my shelves. I want to give them somewhere to go, somewhere to learn, somewhere to ponder the dynamics of life. The importance of reading is undoubtedly eternal. If books have changed your world the way that they have mine, please help me provide a child with the same experience.
