I walked in to my classroom at EK excited to start my first year of teaching six very special students... I knew that the community-based special education program at Karr had been a little neglected, but I was disappointed to find my classroom equipped with very few supplies and absolutely no materials that could help me accommodate my students' needs! I am working to prepare my students to exit high school; I want to make sure that their last school year equips them with the skills to make that transition. I need the tools to teach my students about currency, community signs, and social skills to prepare them for our class trips in the community and for community involvement after high school. When we are not engaging in the community, we are in the classroom - I also need the tools to teach them essential elementary level reading and math skills like number sense and letter identification. Additionally, we dedicate class time to working on art projects, learning basic cooking skills, and practicing essential daily tasks (like hand washing and shoe-tying). All of these activities require supplies! I would love to be able to keep my students engaged as much as possible both academically and socially. However, four of my students have an Autism-spectrum disorder and need extra accommodations to keep them comfortable - squishy/fidget toys, noise-blocking headphones, and a quiet-zone beanbag chair are just a few examples of how my students would be able to "escape" in the classroom when they become over-stimulated. All of these items will help to knock down the barriers that currently keep my students from participating in class.
