My students are a close community of English and Spanish speakers who celebrate and learn from one another. They all work in pair or collaborative groups and understand that there is no "I" in team. Because both groups (English native speakers and Spanish native speakers) are learning a second language, they understand the challenges and joys that come in learning a second language, therefore are compassionate of one another and push each other to be risk takers. As a co-founder of the dual language program at my school and this being our first year, we have faced challenges but also big gains. Our students have fallen in love with languages and the value that being bilingual brings. At an early age they have learned to embrace each other's differences and similarities. They constantly ask to be read in English and Spanish (and other languages too!) and their curiosity about the world has expanded. We are not only preparing future leaders and change makers but also great people.
