Many of my students are like volcanoes, full of fiery passion and potential, however stuck in a stage of dormancy. For the most part, they are 15 years old and believe that reading is boring and more of a pain than an inspiration. My 20 honors students said the same thing until I placed the 500 page novel on their desks. From the time we began the text as a class, it was a battle to have them not read ahead! At the conclusion of the novel, they exclaimed that I had to find a way to get enough copies of Kaffir Boy to read it with all of my students the following year and that this might be the book to spark the readers in their other peers.
