My students and I live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our state. We live surrounded by domestic violence, drug abuse, poverty,and homelessness. Many parent's struggle to survive, and are unable to support their children's academic progress or emotional well-being. Many students in our school receive free or reduced lunch and live in non-traditional homes; being raised by single parents, Grandma & Papa, or other relatives. And yet my children come to school with enough energy to power our entire neighborhood, enough love to fuel world peace, and so much resilience, that it would surely put most of us to shame. They come to me in kindergarten with the street savvy of an alley cat and many experiences that would shatter most. But each day they arrive with smiles and hugs, eager and anxious to learn. They are the reason that I teach.
