Sometimes we chalk up poor reading to the classic "students don't like to read". We have to reframe that thinking into "students want to read books that are worth reading". Students want to buy into literature and are hungry for new narratives. Our job as educators is to help foster that by using resources such as culturally relevant books and memoirs. Students deserve books that are worth their time to read. "The Circuit" is a collection of memoirs that deal with the migrant experience but also the universal experience of a family trying to maintain normality in face of adversity. The author allows his audience to experience with him the raw emotion of growing up and trying to do his best in the face of struggle and heartbreak. Literacy is a powerful tool that equips our students to see the world through new eyes. Reading memoirs also allows students to connect to the life of another and foster a sense of empathy which leads to action.
