Students spend majority of their day in school Monday through Friday. School should be a fun, safe, and COMFORTABLE place for them. This project will provide flexible seating options for students besides a hard chair and a desk. Students can become easily distracted, but having the ability and freedom to move and change their seat can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise. With various types of flexible seating, my classroom will accommodate students who enjoy laying down on the floor to complete their schoolwork, or those who prefer to stand while working, and even those that have a harder time sitting still; they can benefit from a wiggle cushion. I will encourage all of my students to try the various types of flexible seating. By doing this students can see first hand how each type of seating is different, and in hopes think about how well they can complete their best first grade work. I will have various types of seating (scoop rocker chairs, lap trays, clipboards, cushions, carpet squares, etc.) set up throughout the classroom, so students can move throughout the classroom or choose a spot that is best for them. Students will have the option to choose their type of seating each morning for the day. They will complete their work, centers/stations, projects, and so much more in their chosen "seat" for the day. Again, students spend so much time in the classroom and they need to be comfortable. By giving students more choices it will help empower them to make better choices and become more successful in the classroom. Having choices helps them become more independent.
