Last year, we introduced lessons where students were learning about their history in this country and found this was a shared interest throughout the grade level. Excited to gain more knowledge about themselves, they were invested in rigorous texts and involved in class discussions more so than ever before. When asked what types of projects or topics they wanted to cover, their feedback was they wished for more time and books that shared their stories. This library will help promote self and cultural awareness to my students and it will help them be more reflective about their lives and experiences. I have the incredible opportunity to teach last year's class of 2025 again, this year as 6th graders. I want to continue to push them to learn more about their community and other communities, as well. Our current classroom library has been assembled with a series of heavily used and donated books. After many years of using the books, they are in poor condition and I want students to have access to better resources. Engagement is such a key component in student achievement because it drives students to be self-motivated towards their own learning. I love teaching and getting my students interested in reading, and sometimes all it takes is the right books to get them hooked on reading. My goal is to have a broader range of topics and diversity in our classroom library in order to continue promoting college readiness and culturally relevant conversations. Students should have autonomy over what they read and I believe this classroom library would be a small way to promote this and will ultimately give them more confidence about who they are in order to live choice-filled lives.
