Our school is a Title I school. This is a high poverty area where some families cannot afford the basic school supplies. The majority of students receive free and reduced lunch. School can be the only learning outlet for them. This is an amazing age to work with the children, where they are excited and want to learn and progress. We are trying to instill a wonderful learning basis and a love for reading that will carry on to higher grades. We are in a rural community in an agricultural area. My classroom consists of predominately English language learners that are immersed in a foreign language and a foreign culture. My students are working on becoming fluent independent readers, while acquiring and second language. Through literature and listening stations students are being exposed to the English language, new words and vocabulary, while having syntax, sentence structure, and fluent reading and intonation modeled for them.
