Students love to read when they can relate to the book. My language learners are interested in their cultures and home countries, but our library doesn't have books available in some of the newer languages represented at our school. Also, from talking to students and parents, I have learned that many families don't have books like these at home. Books like these will also help families new to the country feel more comfortable at our school. Bilingual books will help student see the relationship between their native languages and English. They also help keep the parents engaged in reading with their students. Having copies for the students to keep at home and check out from our library will help build bridges between home to school as well as among English language learners and native English students. Teachers and students are excited about checking out these books. Our third grade classes study different cultures in social studies and our second graders celebrate Christmas Around the World. These books in the library would be an excellent source of information for these projects.
