My students are a combination of third and fourth graders who are all still acquiring the English language. The English skills range from the emergent level of those that have just arrived in the country within the past 18 months to the high intermediate level of those that have been schooled entirely in the U.S., but are surrounded by another language at home. 80% of my students are on free or reduced lunch and few have the travel or cultural experiences that those from a higher economic neighborhood may have. We work hard at maintaining a culture of respect and learning, therefore by this time in the year students are no longer afraid to ask questions, take risks or try new things. They do a great job supporting and encouraging one another both emotionally and educationally in our family-like environment.
