I serve in a high poverty area (98%) and many of my students do not meet state standards. My classroom consists of 30 students in which 95% are Hispanic and bilingual, many are not yet fluent in English. My school is a city public school with a stretched out budget. My students are in need of more interactive curriculum and tools that will keep them engaged and excited about learning and attending school since many of them are coming from homes in which they do not receive support nor do they value education. I want to show my students how exciting it is to know how to read and write. I want to set them up for success and show them how important it is to try their best. I also want to provide them with the same experiences and opportunities available to students in more affluent areas.
