I am requesting six new kindles for my classroom. It is critical that our new generations of students have strong digital literacy skills. Students need to know how to safely use technology to the greatest benefit. Technology is an additional tool in the teacher’s classroom, a tool that allows students access to resources beyond the traditional classroom. With technology, my students and I have enjoyed visiting digital museum collections, watching livestreams from aquariums on the other side of the country, taking pictures of space using telescopes from Harvard, accessing books that are not available in the classroom, and reviewing material we have learned through engaging games. We have endless opportunities for further exploration through technology, but using 6 kindles between 24-26 students limits those opportunities. I would love to be able to provide 6 more kindles to my class, so that students can work in pairs or smaller groups as we utilize technology in the classroom. We currently have six kindles and six classroom laptops. Our laptops are slow and can take 10 minutes to boot up, frequently break down, and are sometimes needed elsewhere in the building. Six more kindles would bring the total of kindles to 12 and the total of student technology in my classroom to 18 devices, much closer to my 24-26 student class size.
