In order to create a positive working environment, I am requesting sensory tools and materials for flexible seating options. Research shows that middle school students specifically are in a critical time of development. ESL students, who may struggle with language acquisition while meeting the demands of the traditional content areas and grade level CCSS expectations are especially in need of tools that can help to accommodate their needs. Providing options for choice and comfort, such as alternative seating, fidget tools, and softened lighting can create opportunities for personal responsibility, promote positive interactions, lower their affective filters, and enhance learning in the classroom setting.
