Starting the year virtually with FIRST graders presents the daunting task of creating a sense of UNITY and COMMUNITY without my students ever having met me in person! Especially with younger learners this connection and social-emotional component is critical in motivating them to feel comfortable participating in class and begin thinking and focusing in academic ways. I wish to give all of my scholar's a real hat for them to use as a "thinking cap". They will put their hats on when they "go to class"; I'm sure many of us can relate to the struggle of separating work and life due to remote working. More importantly, when we start our morning classroom circle (to talk about agency, mindfulness, community, empathy, collaboration etc.) the students will look onto their screens and see a sea of yellow hats to remind them that they are part of a community of thinkers.
