In one year of a 1st grader's life, they come to me as emergent readers of simple books and leave as transitional readers of early chapter books. The growth that needs to happen for these students can only happen within a safe, nurturing, and responsive environment. There are disadvantages and hurdles that these kids do face, but I'm determined that they will persevere.
